Andy Rohr’s “Growing” expresses the physical world’s intricate patterns through a variety of paper media, from tiny folded cranes inhabiting glass bottles to a series of colored penciled cumuli on tracing paper. The obsessive detail of Rohr’s work results in engrossing and surprising art; for instance, a series of graphite and colored-pencil pieces depicting cellular activity resemble continental maps from afar, while up close they reveal a multiplicity of individual molecules. Manmade minutiae make an appearance in the form of old books, the pages of which Rohr has cut to create shapes or compartments. There is one catch in viewing Rohr’s exhibition, though: Elastic Arts, a sound and vision gallery, does not offer gallery hours apart from scheduled events, so patrons must take in both music and art. This week, choose from an installation of Elastic’s improvised music series on Thursday (with Rempis, Haaker Flaten and Rosaly), experimental musicians Barbez and Matnia on Friday and the elastic hip-hop series on Saturday, featuring Superheroes of Sound.
