Heather Marie Vernon uses her many self-styled and performed characters to speak on many levels of potential when saying “We’re not ready yet,” “The illusion isn’t complete!”, “We’re not ready to commit!”, “We are not ourselves!” Although it may seem as if the multiple video kiosks display the many faces of the artist, a certain level the work is incredibly shy and guarded, shrouded by the veil of irony given to any costume or any farcical composition. This work is a reflection of Vernon, an aggregate of her influences and experiences, as much as any artwork she creates, regardless of the medium. The piece intends to explore Roland Barthes’ notion of a “readerly” text, a composition that permits free space for the reader to creatively interpret and shape his or her own understanding. Especially in the context of a busy and noisy opening, observing the installation is remarkably parallel to the common habit of eavesdropping or checking other people out in the gallery. It is the viewer’s process, choosing who to look at and what to listen to, that shapes the work in the moment, and forms whatever the individual memory of the work may be.
