“This is how we walk on the moon” is the result of collaboration with Collective Gallery in Edinburgh Scotland. Motivated by disconnection between residents and the nearby sea, Billing charted a brief sailboat tour attended by a group of local musicians. Throughout the voyage and the film characters progress subtly, gradually gaining confidence in the motions of sailing, a faint emotional evolution present resulting from time spent exposed to an unfamiliar and wilder nature. Detachment and melancholy are reoccurring elements within Billing’s work, yet the subject of sea and sailing connects with a historical tradition of classical artwork (paintings, drawings, et al.) frequently exploring isolation and existential contemplation. There is no specific destination or narrative, for this is a pleasure cruise not of margaritas and dinner theater but of physical exertion and introspection. (Lisa Larson-Walker)
