Newcity is seeking an artist to hijack our print publication for the September 5 issue. The artist will take full command of our cover art and three-to-four pages inside of our free alt-weekly newspaper.
We are seeking proposals from Chicago-based artists who want to take advantage of our distribution stream—30,000 copies circulated across 900+ locations throughout Chicago—and who will make the most of our magazine format. This is for the September 5 issue, the big gallery opening weekend, so all eyes will be on your art!
Specifications about the space allotted: Cover art: in color, 10 inches (width) x 11 inches (length). Incorporate Newcity logo and issue date. Interior pages: three-four pages, in color or b&w, 10 inches (width) x 11 inches (length).
The Proposal Please send digital sketches and a project description. Also send a link to your portfolio website or recent images of artwork. Group submissions will also be considered.
In your proposal you should address: + Why you want to take advantage of our citywide distribution stream. + How your project will function within the structure of our magazine (remember, we are an arts and culture alternative newsweekly. You would be given the cover and 3–4 consecutive pages within the publication.) + Why your project needs to be printed.
Proposal due: Sunday, August 18 Wining selection due: Monday, August 26 Artist Project hits the streets: Thursday, September 5 Winning project must be sent via digital file. The winning artist will also receive $150.
An Artistic Project: Portable Gray at Ten (Issues) The journal was conceived as a way to share the work of the Gray Center’s fellows and the University of Chicago’s broader artistic and scholarly community with the rest of the city. This May the journal will launch its tenth issue on the subject of “Family.”
Cloud Atlas: A Review of Sonya Bogdanova at Ignition Project Space The ephemeral and intangible quality of cloud making is what binds together Bogdanova’s solo exhibition, “A Dream We Dream Together is Reality.” It’s a whimsical move, capturing, on a micro-level, the joy of seeing things in clouds, which is to say, the perceiving of meaning in the random.
