Paul D’Amato
A graduate of Yale University, D’Amato has been taking portraits of African Americans living on the West Side of Chicago for ten years. D’Amato’s approach is conservative rather than creative as he provides humanist portraits of everyday men and women. DePaul Art Museum, September 12-November 24
Josiah McElheny

Art Fair Weekend
EXPO returns to Navy Pier with a selection of international art galleries and an interesting list of programs and events co-hosted by the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Also worthy of attention are the satellite art fairs taking place around the same time that offer a more affordable take: Edition, in the West Loop, and Fountain Art Fair, in Pilsen. A Study in Midwest Appropriation
Co-curator of the upcoming Whitney Biennal, Michelle Grabner puts together a group exhibition showcasing contemporary art from the Midwest on the theme of appropriation. Roxy Paine
